The festival is held annually in Ijebu-Ode, Ogun State, Nigeria. Occurring exactly three days after the Eid al-Adha (Ileya/Eid el-Kabir) celebrations, this event has grown from a local tradition into a global phenomenon that people look forward to all year.
A Royal History of Tolerance
To understand its magic, you have to look at how it began. In the 19th century, during the reign of Oba Adesimbo Tunwase, an unprecedented shift happened: a massive number of his subjects began converting to Islam. Rather than prosecuting them, Oba Tunwase granted them total freedom of worship. In a beautiful show of gratitude, those Muslim converts made it a habit to visit the king's palace in their finest outfits to thank him for his tolerance. Over the decades, this tradition evolved, opening up to non-Muslims, global tourists, and celebrities alike.

Sidenote: Those majestic horse riders you see charging through the square are actually descendants of the kingdom's ancient royal warriors, showcasing their martial heritage!
The Ultimate Cultural Runway: Aso Oke Styles at Ojude Oba
The runway comes alive with Aso Oke—one of my absolute favorite fabrics—showcased in all its elegant glory. The fashion brief for the day is beautifully simple, yet luxurious: women step out in resplendent Iro and Buba, while the men command attention in towering Agbadas. The real showstoppers, however, are the Regberegbe. These are traditional age-grade societies that parade before the grand pavilion. Each age grade picks a unique, distinct outfit for the year, resulting in a breathtaking sea of coordinated colors, luxury textures, and heavy gold jewelry.
Before you press play on these incredible visuals captured by Niyi Fagbemi, make sure you're ready. You are about to be treated to a rich, flamboyant buffet of Yoruba culture celebrated through high fashion.
